.It was a cold bright day for our Christmas adventure. Our walk started in the Derbyshire village of Tideswell. Group A headed off at speed for the tops, the only sound being their merry chatter and the crunch of ice. They headed south descending through picturesque Monks Dale. Reaching a crucial junction they were given a choice of route. Some followed Len on a safe mud-free journey. Others followed Phil on a narrow track, steeply down, then bounding over stepping stones to cross a babbling brook. None the worse for wear, Phil and Len’s groups reunited laughing at the bottom. They had a very jolly break with sharing of mulled wine and mince pies.
Meanwhile, Group B, swollen in numbers were chomping at the bit for some leg-stretching action. Straight on to the High Peak Trail they went, via a death-defying stone wall style that would have give the club safety officer a serious attack of the vapours. With Carol and Jean setting a very impressive early pace, they marched onto elevenses at the base of a towering rocky outcrop.
Group A continued along the Monsal Trail, the route of the former Midland Railway line. Very interesting it was too, with interpretation boards explaining the history of the railway and its industry. Group B pushed on to the village of Crowdicote, enjoying panoramic views of the Dragons Back and surrounding High Peak. They partook of luncheon at the ancient Pilsbury Castle. Special mention goes to the two ladies who managed to carry along a full desert wine bottle and glasses for their tiffin. Many of the group were keen not to linger as they knew that Christmas dinner awaited. Group A also marched on with their eyes on the prize.
Before we reached our destination, the party spirit had begun to take hold. Finally at The Duke of York in Flagg we took our seats, donned our hats and pulled our crackers. We had a smashing turkey dinner followed by fruit crumble with custard.
At the end of the day and before we got on the bus, we were treated to the most gorgeous sunset. Many thanks to Phil, Len and Ash for leading us on another brilliant walk.
Here’s wishing you and yours all the best for 2020.
The next walk is on Sunday January 26th. We sample the delights of the Vale of Belvoir. This walk is lead by Viv and Len, who have already pre-walked it and applied appropriate tweaks. Bring your maps! For more information, contact Phil on 07783953212 or Email email@example.com
